Around 10 % of the gross domestic product in Japan is generated in the construction market, 10 % of all jobs are in this sector. In the fiscal year 2014/2015, sales amounted to a volume of around 350 billion euros. The Japanese construction market is thus the fourth largest in the world.
According to the plans of the Japanese government, construction and infrastructure projects are to strategically develop the region and make Tokyo more attractive, but also more energy-efficient. To achieve this, the limited space available is to be used more effectively and sustainably and the energy efficiency of buildings is to be increased. The "Ten-Year Plan for the Rehabilitation and Renewal of Central Facilities" in the metropolis, which dates from 2009, was relaunched in 2015 and budgeted at 750 billion yen. The trend towards "green" or "smart" buildings is particularly noticeable in the major cities. In Tokyo, all new construction projects with more than 2,000 m2 will be subject to stricter building regulations in terms of energy efficiency from 2017.
