GJETC - Meet the Co-Chairs and Council Members

The future of carbon pricing and critical raw materials: policy paths for Germany and Japan as partners in the energy transition“

19.02.2025, Tokyo

he GJETC will hold an Outreach Event where participants may get to know the Co-Chairs and its Council Members in Tokyo. In its current working phase, the German-Japanese Energy Transition Council (GJETC) will focus on two key aspects for a successful energy transition: the public acceptance of carbon pricing and the availability of critical minerals for renewable energy technologies:

  • Over the years, the global supply chains of critical raw materials has become increasingly dynamic with the emergence of renewable energy technologies. UN goals like the tripling of renewable energy by 2030 require clear policy plans to meet the rising demand for critical raw materials.
  • At the same time, carbon pricing markets are actively evolving, with the second EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS 2) to be started in 2027 and Japan aiming for carbon pricing for industry in 2028. Now, Germany and Japan need to position themselves to successfully navigate these emerging issues in the coming years.

In the event on Feb 19, the German and Japanese GJETC Co-Chairs and Council Members will provide insights into the GJETC’s findings and policy recommendations on both issues and will discuss it with the audience. After the discussion there will be a joint networking lunch with the Co-Chairs and the Japanese and German Council Members.
