Webinar: From Coal to Cool

Online

Structural Change Effects of the “German Energiewende”
New Business Opportunities in Eastern Germany

On the road to carbon neutrality in 2045, the structural change in former coal mining regions is a big challenge. The German government has allocated massive incentives to support the development of low-carbon industries such as hydrogen technology, smart grids and clean mobility.

One of these regions is the “Lausitz” (engl. Lusatia) is located in the States of Brandenburg and Saxony in Eastern Germany. Innovative projects are underway or in the pipeline here in several technology fields:

  • Recycling: e.g. airplane recycling (Airbus group), battery recycling (BASF)
  • Hydrogen: e.g. the “Hydrogen Lab” (Siemens), hydrogen research center of the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU)
  • Smart Mobility: e.g. CHESCO Center For Hybrid Electric Systems Cottbus (Rolls Royce and others), test center for autonomous driving (DEKRA)
  • Energy: e.g. the reference power plant Lausitz (RefLau)

The Economic Development Organisations of Saxony and Brandenburg State invited all interested Japanese companies to a webinar on October 5th, 2021. Experts from administration, industry (Skeleton, Nagano Keiki) and academia (Fraunhofer IAP) provided first-hand information on the business potentials and gave an insight into ongoing and planned projects in the field of energy, hydrogen and mobility.
